Studies show that feeling in control during your baby's birth is the number one factor in a positive birth experience and also the number one protective factor against suffering birth trauma.
You have seen and heard so many health messages which tell you that plus-size pregnancy is risky...
You worry that your baby might be 'at risk' because of your weight...
You're keen to do the best for your health and your baby, but confused about the evidence, and what the 'best thing' is...
If so, you’re not alone.
I've helped hundreds of plus size women and so I know many women worry a lot about their weight and how they will be treated by pregnancy health professionals.
I also know that many of the ‘facts’ they’ve been given about their weight in pregnancy are inaccurate. The real evidence is often over-simplified and distorted and this leads to a really damaging, sometimes demeaning focus on weight for pregnant plus size women.
I believe this needs to change.

Hey there, I’m Alice.
Registered Midwife, MSc, PhD
It’s my mission to help as many women as possible have a happy and healthy pregnancy!
I have been a UK registered midwife for over twenty years. I’ve worked in complex care teams, homebirth teams, I’ve taught hypnobirthing and done everything in between! Along the way I’ve had my own three children, two in hospital, one at home – all very different experiences.
Almost as soon as I qualified back in 2001, I became interested in specialising in care for plus size women. I made sure I got plenty of experience and got all the extra training I could, and in 2008 I secured a position specialising in plus size care. I’ve never looked back.
Over the past decade or so I’ve also tucked an MSc and a PhD under my belt and in doing so I’ve taken a deep dive into plus size women’s experiences of pregnancy and care. More recently I hung up my hospital scrubs and I’ve been lecturing and researching in universities, spreading the word to policy makers and health professionals about how we can improve care. My published research is quoted by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in their latest UK plus size care guidelines.
Too often I’ve seen impersonal, rules-based care offered to women and I’ve made it my mission to change this through empowering women to advocate for themselves.
